My internship experience at the Centre for Digital Scholarship at the Leiden University Libraries
On her last day, Centre for Digital Scholarship intern Vanessa Köstner reflects on her four months at the Leiden University Libraries:
My internship at the Centre for Digital Scholarship (CDS) in the Leiden University Library was an enriching experience. This opportunity allowed me to dive into the world of digital scholarship and data management, allowing me to engage with projects that had a significant impact on the university community. From developing registration forms to creating online modules, my time at the CDS was filled with learning, creativity, and networking.
Exploring the work environment
At the beginning of March 2024, my stay at the CDS started, giving me insights in the data management aspect of the library landscape. Walking into the office each day, I was greeted by a team of dedicated professionals, which worked passionately and enthusiastically on their projects. They willingly integrated me into their day-to-day work and gave me a deeper understanding of the FAIR principles and Open Science. The collaborative atmosphere encouraged the exchange of ideas and fostered a supportive environment where creativity thrived. Especially, the weekly Monday “What’s cooking” sessions had a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
Formdesk registration form project
One of the key projects I worked on during my internship was developing a registration form using Formdesk. This platform is designed to create and manage online forms with ease. My task was to design a user-friendly registration form that could be used for applying to the “How to write a Data Management Plan” workshop and to create a simpler workflow.
Key learnings from Formdesk:
- User-friendly design: I learned the importance of modifying forms with the end-user in mind. Ensuring the form was intuitive and easy to navigate was crucial for enhancing user experience.
- Data management: Understanding how to collect, store, and manage data securely was a vital aspect of this project. I gained insights into best practices for handling sensitive information.
- Feedback integration: Incorporating feedback from the CDS team was essential for refining the form. The testing and adjustments helped in creating a polished final product.
Creating an online module with Articulate 360
Another exciting project I was involved in, was about developing an online module on Data Management using Articulate 360. This tool is widely used for creating interactive e-learning content. My goal was to design a module on Data Management Plans that could be used for training and educational purposes within the university.
Key learnings from Articulate 360:
- Instructional design: I delved into the principles of instructional design, learning how to create content that is not only informative but also engaging and interactive.
- Multimedia integration: Articulate 360 allows for the integration of various multimedia elements such as videos, quizzes, and interactive simulations. I learned how to use these features effectively to enhance learning outcomes.
- Project management: Managing the development of the module from concept to completion required strong project management skills. I learned how to set milestones, manage time effectively, and collaborate with a team to ensure the project met its objectives.
Everyday life at the CDS
Beyond the projects, the everyday life at the CDS was dynamic and full of opportunities for growth. Regular team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and workshops kept the environment lively and fun.
Networking and professional growth
Working at the CDS also provided opportunities to network with professionals from various fields in the digital scholarship. Attending seminars and conferences broadened my understanding of digital scholarship and opened doors for future collaborations. The mentorship I received from experienced colleagues was invaluable, guiding me through the digital projects and research support.
Fun and camaraderie
The CDS team knows how to balance hard work with fun. Social events, coffee breaks, and team-building activities were a regular part of the internship experience. These moments of camaraderie helped build strong bonds within the team, making the work environment even more enjoyable.
Conclusion
My internship at the Centre for Digital Scholarship at the Leiden University Libraries was an unforgettable experience. It provided me with a platform to apply my skills, learn new technologies, and grow both personally and professionally. The projects I worked on, including the Formdesk registration form and the online module in Articulate 360, were both challenging and rewarding. The supportive and innovative environment at the CDS made every day an adventure, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of such a forward-thinking team.
